Earth System Model Development Version 3
Earth System Model Development Version 3
The third version of the IITM Earth System Model (IITM-ESMv3) development is in progress by incorporating a new dynamic atmospheric core, new ocean grid, Indian land-use land cover data and interactive river discharge. The triangular cubic octahedral grid (TCO grid) is incorporated in IITM-ESM which provides higher effective resolution (global resolution of 67Km) and computational efficiency. The new ocean grid provides increased resolution near the tropics. Preliminary analysis of the IITM-ESMv3 shows improvement in the dry bias in precipitation over South Asian region and improvement in large-scale circulation features as compared to previous version. New vegetation scheme is based on National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) Land Use Land Cover data based on Indian Remote Sensing Satellite Data. The IITM-ESMv3 will participate in the upcoming Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP7) of WCRP and contribute to upcoming Seventh Assessment Report of IPCC.
Long-term Roadmap
A very high-resolution (Km scale), hybrid (physics + ML) Earth system model which can generate climate projections over the twenty-first century and beyond for robust climate risk assessments and various sectorial applications.
